Why You Don't Need to be Skinny to Start Pole Dancing

One of the most common reasons women tell me they don’t want to try pole dancing is because they feel like they need to lose weight to start. I can completely understand where this reasoning comes from. People think strong means you have to be skinny and only skinny people pole dance. Well this is completely false! Let’s dive into why you can be any size and work the pole.

First things first. It is unrealistic standards of beauty and fitness that have women thinking you have to be skinny in order to pole dance. Everyone who works out cannot and will not be a size 2. There are so many factors that go into fitness inside the body and it is pretty unfair to normal sized woman that the only images shown in fitness are images of small people. Unfortunately the pole dance world can fall into the same routine where the only people you see representing pole dance are small and skinny but that is far from the truth! I know plenty of normal and curvy sized women who take pole dance classes and excel at it! I wish this image of everyone being small would go away because it is far from the truth. I have taken classes and taught classes with women of all different shapes and sizes. In our society, we have been brainwashed to believe that a “sexy” body type is one that has perky boobs, a small waist, a flat stomach, and a round behind. This is not true. Your body type no matter what it may look like is sexy enough for pole dance.

Thinking you have to be skinny to start is completely a mental block as for the most part are physically able to start. If you are healthy enough for traditional exercise, you are healthy enough for pole dance. In some cases, if a student wants to start pole dancing but has doctor’s orders and instructions on what the student can and cannot do, any pole dance instructor will be happy to work around that. I have too many prospective students tell me they can’t do it before they have even tried which isn’t cool! Yes it might be challenging at first but students start to see amazing results once they try! When coupled with a healthy diet, pole dance actually helps women lose weight. Losing weight to start seems kind of silly to me when you are doing a fitness activity that can actually help you lose weight. Because pole dance is an exercise that many women enjoy, they stick to it which means they get results!

Some women are concerned that the pole will not be able to hold their weight. When you see people fall off the pole on YouTube or any other online videos that is usually not due to the person’s weight at all. A lot of times the pole becomes disconnected due to poor installation or improper technique. When poles are installed properly, they do not fall. If you are taking classes at a studio there is even a lower probability of the pole falling because at most studios poles are permanently mounted to the ceiling and it would take a lot to get them to fall down. Manufacturers of poles are unable to give specific statistics about how much weight their poles will hold because they can’t control the environment they are going to be in however in a general setting one pole company says their pole can hold up to 250 lbs. and poles mounted to the ceiling can hold even more than that. You thinking the pole is going to fall down because of your weight isn’t a good reason to not try a pole dance class.

Let’s get the idea out of your head that you need to be skinny to start pole dancing. You don’t need to be a certain weight, height, or anything. All you really need is the willingness to try something different in order to push your body towards new levels of fitness. Once you start pole dancing you will amazed at all the things your body can do at any size. Your starting weight does not matter but what does matter is how you feel about you and how you will feel about you after you start pole dancing.
